TMTPOST -- Kimi, an AI chatbot developed by Moonshot AI, made its debut in China on November 16, 2023   and quickly soared to the top of the Apple App Store download charts, surpassing prominent platforms like WeChat and Douyin   at one point.

Hailed as the "Chinese ChatGPT," Kimi has demonstrated the ability to process texts of up to two   million words with unmatched fluency, surpassing rivals such as Baidu's Wenxin Yiyan. By October, the app had garnered over 36 million active monthly users.

Moonshot AI, a startup,   was   founded just 579 days ago by Yang Zhilin, a 31-year-old entrepreneur and AI innovator. Yang, with   a bachelor ’ s degree from   Tsinghua University and a PhD degree   from Carnegie Mellon University, has   been engaged in AI research, including co-authoring pivotal studies on Transformer-XL and XLNet. Prior to founding Moonshot AI, he gained valuable experience working at Meta AI and Google AI before returning to China.

Moonshot AI has secured   billions of investment from major backers such as Alibaba, Tencent, and Sequoia China, with its valuation now exceeding 20 billion yuan. However, questions linger about the sustainability of its business model, as high marketing expenditures and concerns about profitability loom large.  

At Kimi ’ s one-year anniversary, Yang introduced the k0-math model, which is poised to compete with OpenAI's o1-mini and o1-preview models. Early benchmarks indicate that k0-math excels in solving national exam-level problems and competitive math datasets, achieving up to 90% of o1-mini ’ s performance. Moonshot plans to gradually integrate the k0-math model into Kimi's platform, alongside new search enhancements powered by reinforcement learning.

Yang emphasized Moonshot AI's commitment to user retention and strategic growth. "Retention is crucial and directly tied to progress in AGI,"   he noted. Reflecting on the company ’ s journey, he highlighted the importance of prioritizing quality over quantity, moving away from the traditional "big factory"   mindset.

As the AI sector continues to evolve, Yang remains optimistic about the future, citing advancements in scaling laws and reinforcement learning as key drivers of progress. "AI development is like a pendulum swing,"   he remarked, expressing confidence in the long-term trajectory of the industry.  

In the face of intense competition and mounting expectations, Kimi ’ s   meteoric   rise exemplifies China ’ s determination to lead in the global AI race.
